This week’s blog is all about – what else? – the Australian Open in Melbourne .
The Australian Open, the first of four Grand Slams, is a media highlight not only Down Under but around the whole world. In more than 200 countries, from Eurosport for Europe, to ESPN for America and BBC for the UK, to NTV Plus for Russia and ESPN Star Sports for Asia, the major channels broadcast the event worldwide.
The official website of the Australian Open www.Australianopen.com counted more than 49 million visitors in 2012. Thousands of volunteers ensure that the players every need is met. No wonder players like Sharapova, Federer or Djokovic are followed on every step they take. They not only represent top tennis, but are also ambassadors of exclusive brands as well as being icons to millions of people.
Getting in really close touching distance of a player is not really possible of course, otherwise how would a player like Federer be able to fully focus? Fortunately the AO organization allows us to getting to know players from the sidelines, in ways we don’t see every day: laughing, joking around, dancing, sharing childhood memories etc. A great memory came during the Australian Open Kids Day for instance, when Novak and Serena danced the Gangnam Style as thousands of kids were applauding and Roger pretended to be a ball kid. Another highlight was during the “Open Drive ” on the way to and from Melbourne Park , when Novak shared a childhood anecdote and players were asked to give us their best “Aussie” accent.
Most of us will never get the chance to go to Melbourne , feel the atmosphere and watch top tennis live Down Under. Fortunately the sporting goods manufacturers allow us to look like the stars Down Under and to transfer the Australian-Open-feeling to the tennis courts back home.
The newest Australian Open collection, now available on www.TennisPlanet.co/uk is waiting for you.
