Wealth is a significant factor in tennis, and if the current Forbes Rich List is anything to go by, it is clear that this is a significant factor. So, in my first blog of the week we here at Tennis Planet take a look at the Tennis stars in the Forbes rich list.
Federer is the highest in the list, at 31st, with Nadal at 47th. Maria Sharapova is 71st, and Serena Williams and Li Na at 87th.
Forbes commented on Federer’s portfolio stating: “Federer has the most impressive sports portfolio in sport, with 9 sponsors that collectively earn more then $30 million annually including deals such as Nike, Rolex, Wilson and Credit Suisse. He also commands more then $1 Millon per exhibition event. Federer is often perceived as the greatest tennis player ever. He holds the records for the most single grand slam wins and career prize money ($70 million). He appeared in a major amount of finals between 2005 and 2010, appearing in 18 out of 19 grand slams”.
Nadal, according to Forbes, “has also become one of the highest ranking Tennis players of all time. He has ranked among the top two in the ATP rankings for seven-straight years. His $48 million in career prize money ranks only second to Roger Federer. He became the same person to win the tournament for eight straight years when he won the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters in April 2012. Nadal has expanded his portfolio in recent years and counts Bacardi, Kia Motors, and Richard Mille among his sponsors.”
